The results are in for the Club Membership Contest… and they’re astounding!
First off, THANK YOU for all your work and leadership in building healthier communities. Although the pandemic has already affected our sport in many ways, cross country skiing will be highly appreciated by our communities this winter.
Some overall highlights:
- Club membership across the province is up 56% compared to this day last year.
- Half our clubs have already beaten their previous winter’s total.
- 20 clubs have already broken their all-time membership record!
- More than 2,100 kids are already enrolled in the Kal Tire Skill Development Program, likely en route to a new record. More kids than ever before are learning the skills to enjoy our lifetime sport.
A few club highlights:
- Sovereign Lake continues to lead the nation as Canada’s largest club. Not far behind is Caledonia, having cracked 2,000 members for the first time ever, only the 2nd club in Canada to have done so.
- Kimberley and Telemark have cracked 1,600 and 1,500 members respectively for the first time ever.
- 3 new clubs have cracked the 1,000 mark for the first time ever (Overlander, Fernie, and Nelson), joining Larch Hills and the others for a total of 8 clubs above 1,000. And Revy will crack 1,000 any day now…
- Bulkley Valley, Black Jack, and Golden have cracked 800 for the first time ever.
- In addition to above, some phenomenal % increases over last year: Bear Mountain 22%, Whistler 23%, 100 Mile 29%, Toby Creek 43%, Nechako 64%, and Skmana 94%.
- Last but not least, two of our newest clubs have posted incredible results: Chetwynd with a 5-fold increase and Phoenix with a 4-fold increase.
Next, a HUGE THANK YOU to the Membership Contest sponsors for supporting our “sport for life”. Each of them readily stepped up to the plate to support this initiative and they’ve been fantastic to work with.

And finally, the results:
- Group A: Photo finish, with Telemark a toe-length in front of Sovereign Lake. Caledonia right behind, with Kimberley and then Larch Hills not far back. With Larch Hills surpassing last year’s record any day now, all 5 clubs will have broken their all-time membership record. Huge kudos to Kimberley, with 1,616 members for such a small town.
- Group B: Despite incredible efforts by all, Overlander was simply too strong. Nelson, Fernie, Bulkley Valley, and Golden were next in a very tight chase pack, with Black Jack and Revy not far behind. All 7 of these clubs have already set new records.
- Group C: Strong finish by Toby Creek, setting a new record in the process, followed by Nickel Plate. Impressive finish by Snow Valley, moving from the back of the pack to 3rd, breaking their previous membership record yet again. Cariboo and Hollyburn were next, leading a couple others across the line.
- Group D: On the final stretch, 100 Mile was able to catch Whistler for the win and a new record. Strong finish by Whiskey Jack for 3rd and yet another new record. Sea to Sky was next, followed by Omineca with a strong finish to lead a few others.
- Group E: Strong finish by Skmana for the win and a new record, followed by Bear Mountain. Valhalla Hills passed a number of clubs on the homestretch to finish 3rd, setting another new club record. Next is Sunset Ridge and Sun Peaks, leading a few others across the line.
- Group F: Despite a valiant effort by Phoenix, Chetwynd hung on for the win, with both clubs setting records. Nice work by Nechako in 3rd, then Barriere, McKinney, and Clinton next.
Winners will be contacted shortly.
Here’s the data for clubs that have already achieved 90% of last winter’s membership. Current membership is also shown for reference. Clubs in yellow have already broken their all-time membership record.

Prizes can be used by clubs as they see fit: to raffle off, for a family in need, to use as a volunteer draw prize, for a kids program, for an Early-Bird prize … your choice!
To win, a club has to have the highest percentage of members registered*, as of midnight Dec 1 2020, as compared to its previous winter’s total membership. For example, a club with 200 members last year and 140 members by Dec 1 would be at 70%, and a club with 160 members last year and 120 members by Dec 1 would be at 75%.
To make things fair as well as have more winners, clubs have been divided into 6 groups and a winner will be selected from each group, for a total of 6 winners. The prizes will be randomly distributed amongst the winners. The groups, along with last winter’s club membership totals, are shown below.
As a recap from last season, 9 of our clubs had record memberships, and many more were at multi-year highs. Amazing! What is possible this year?
Fingers crossed for early snow!
*As reported in the Zone4 membership database.
