2019-20 Teck Regional Cup Series Update

On the Coast.....

The 2019-20 club aggregate champion for the Teck Coast Cup Series is once again the Hollyburn Cross Country Ski Club (North Vancouver).  Hollyburn (1066 points) held a decisive lead over the Strathcona Nordic Ski Club of Courtenay (715 points) following the final races in the series, which were held at Mt Washington over the weekend. Rounding out the top six clubs from the coast were the Sea to Sky Nordic Ski Club (Squamish - 191), Whistler Nordic Ski Club (119), Spud Valley Nordic Ski Club (Pemberton - 93) and Nordic Racers (Burnaby - 45). 

The first Teck Coast Cup race of the season was cancelled due to lack of snow.  There were  742 race starts in the remaining five-races of the series (average 148 starters per race).

Down In the Kootenays......

The Kimberley Nordic Club (769 points) is the 2019-20 Teck Kootenay Cup Series club aggregate champion following the final races which were held in Nelson on the weekend.  Kimberley beat out the Black Jack Cross Country Ski Club of Rossland, which had accumulated 636 points, to win their first-ever Kootenay title.  The race for third position was close with the Toby Creek Nordic Ski Club of Invermere (532 points) just edging out the Nelson Nordic Ski Club (512 points). The Fernie Nordic Ski Club ended up with 351 points, and even the small Valhalla Hills Nordic Ski Club from New Denver earned themselves 155 points. All clubs put in a solid effort for the most successful Teck Kootenay Cup Series to date.

There were a record 1431 race starts in this eight-race series, the highest number of any region (average 179 starters per race).

Up North......

The north had the largest number of clubs in the program with nine participating.

The Bulkley Valley Cross Country Ski Club of Smithers (711 points) increased it’s lead over the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club of Prince George (298 points) at Teck Northern Cup #4, which was held in Smithers on the weekend.  At the same time, the race for third place in the Teck Northern Cup Series is a tight one, with the Nechako Nordics of Vanderhoof in front with 67 points, just ahead of the Omenica Ski Club (Burns Lake - 58) and Snow Valley Nordic Ski Club (Kitimat - 54).  Also earning points were the Williams Lake Cross Country Ski Club (22), Morice Mountain Nordic Ski Club (Houston – 18), Whiskey Jack Nordic Ski Club (Fort St John - 10) and Cariboo Ski Touring Club (Quesnel - 4).

Teck Regional Cup Highlights: Large turnout on Sunday with Coast Cup #4 attracting 249 registrants in the west, and Kootenay Cup #6 attracting 259 registrants in the east

Following the 6th Teck Kootenay Cup in Kimberley on February 9th, the Kimberley Nordic Club leads the well-attended Teck Kootenay Cup Series with 582 points.  The Toby Creek Nordic Ski Club of Invermere (421 points) has the edge over the Black Jack Cross Country Ski Club of Rossland (311 points) for second place, and the Fernie Nordic Ski Club is in fourth with 256 points. Fernie was the winner of the Kootenay title last season. 

Last weekend’s Kootenay Cup races (5 & 6) drew a total of 290 racers from Alberta, the USA, Taiwan and southern BC. The next and final races in the series take place in Nelson this coming weekend  = https://zone4.ca/register.asp?id=23306&lan=1&cartlevel=1.

 On another front:

  • At the coast the Hollyburn Cross Country Ski Club (Vancouver) has a commanding lead in the chase for the Teck Coast Cup Series trophy with a whopping 972 points following Coast Cup #4 last weekend.  Second place is the Sea to Sky Nordic Club (Squamish) with 191 points, and third place is the Whistler Nordic Ski Club with 119 points.  Hollyburn was the winner of the Coast title last season, but their growing numbers at races has made them even more formidable this year.

Kimberley Nordic Ski Club leads the pack in Teck Kootenay Cup contest

The Kimberley Nordic Ski Club has grabbed the lead from the other cross country ski clubs in the region following the fourth race in the series.  Kimberley (383 points) has a respectable edge over the Toby Creek Nordic Ski Club of Invermere (349), the Black Jack Cross Country Ski Club of Rossland (228) and the Fernie Nordic Ski Club (195), but there are still four races to go and any of the four leading clubs could end up the overall champion. The next Teck Kootenay Cup weekend is scheduled for February 8-9th in Kimberley.  You can follow the results at:  https://zone4.ca/

On other fronts:

  • In the Northern region the Bulkley Valley Cross Country Ski Club of Smithers (433 points) has a comfortable lead over the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club with 292 points.  With two more races to go, the competition for the title could be a good one.  The next Teck Northern Cup race will be held in Smithers on February 16th.
  • At the coast the first Teck Coast Cup was cancelled due to lack of snow.  The Hollyburn Cross Country Ski Club (Vancouver) dominated the second race, accumulating 271 points compared to 57 points for their closest challenger, the Sea to Sky Nordic Ski Club (Squamish).  These are early results, however, as there are four more races coming up in February.  The next Teck Coast Cup weekend is February 8-9th at Whistler Olympic Park in the Callaghan Valley.
  • In the Okanagan the first and only Teck Okanagan Cup race this season will be held at Sun Peaks in March.
