STORED SNOW BACKUP FOR COAST CUP #1

News Release (Vancouver)

Despite the snow not quite reaching the lower levels this season at Whistler Olympic Park in the Callaghan Valley, there are still skiers skiing there. And it appears that Coast Cup #1, hosted by Hollyburn Cross Country Ski Club, will go ahead on November 30 as scheduled. Snow that was stored at the end of last season and covered with sawdust to protect it from the hot summer sun was spread out and made available for various groups to ski on starting in early November. A 900 metre track has been used by the BC Ski Team, BC Development Squad and BC Talent Squad for their early season snow camps, and it will now be the insurance that Coast Cup #1 will happen.

Close to 100 athletes are expected to participate in the event, most of them kids aged 5 and up but also including adults. This is an event that is open to racers of all abilities, from those starting off in their first race to seasoned racers. As an early-season event, relatively short distances are offered. The emphasis is on fun. Online registration for Teck Coast Cup #1 is open until Thursday evening at 9:00 p.m. at www.zone4.ca.

This is the first in a series of 5 regional events that take place at Whistler Olympic Park and at Mount Washington on Vancouver Island with clubs vying for the Teck Coast Cup Series banner. Points are earned by clubs for top five finishes and participation.
