Teck Regional Cup Highlights: Coast Cup #2 attracts 292 registrants; Fernie accumulates 800 points to win Kootenay pennant

Following the 8th and final Teck Kootenay Cup in Nelson on February 24th, the Fernie Nordic Ski Club led the hotly contested, and well-attended Teck Kootenay Cup Series with 800 points.  The Black Jack Cross Country Ski Club of Rossland (686 points) edged out the Nelson Nordic Ski Club (610) for second place and the Kimberley Nordic Ski Club was fourth with 567 points.  

On other fronts:

The Bulkley Valley Cross Country Ski Club of Smithers led the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club of Prince George and the other clubs in the region following the second and final Teck Northern Cup Series race of the season.  The third race was cancelled due to cold weather.  The two clubs earned a total of 384 and 223 points respectively.  This is the third consecutive year the Bulkley Valley Cross Country Ski Club has won the Northern BC title.

The Larch Hills Nordic Society (Salmon Arm) continues to lead the other cross country ski clubs in the region following the third Teck Okanagan Cup in the series.  Larch Hills (522 points) has a comfortable lead over the Telemark Nordic Club of Kelowna (395), Sovereign Lake Nordic Club of Vernon (358) and Revelstoke Nordic Ski Club (340), but there is still one race to go and any of these clubs could end up the overall champion. At the coast the Hollyburn Cross Country Ski Club (Vancouver) is leading the chase for the Teck Coast Cup Series trophy with 376 points after the first race.  Second place is the Sea to Sky Nordic Club (Squamish) with 159 points.  The next and final two Teck Coast Cup races are scheduled for this coming weekend at Mt Washington on Vancouver Island - http://www.crosscountrybc.ca/teck-coast-cup-3-4-race-notice-and-vi-loppet.  This year the Coast has had the Regional Cup race with the larest number of entries - 292.

Fernie Nordic Ski Club leads the pack in Teck Kootenay Cup contest

The Fernie Nordic Ski Club (Fernie, BC) has once again grabbed the lead from the other cross country ski clubs in the region following the fourth event in the series.  Fernie (407 points) has a comfortable lead over the  Black Jack Cross Country Ski Club of Rossland (263), Kimberley Nordic Ski Club (166), Nelson Nordic Ski Club (103) and Valhalla Hills Nordic Ski Club of New Denver (22) but there are still four races to go and any of the leading four could end up the overall champion. On other fronts:

  • In the North the first race will be held at Vanderhoof on Saturday, January 19th.
  • In the Okanagan region the Larch Hills Nordic Society of Salmon Arm (399 points) has the edge over the Revelstoke Nordic Ski Club (253), Sovereign Lake Nordic Club of Vernon (253), Telemark Nordic Club (221) of Kelowna, Nickel Plate Cross Country Ski Club of Penticton (78) and the Overlander Ski Club of Kamloops (26).  With two more races to go, the competition for the title will be a good one.
  • At the coast the first Teck Coast Cup was cancelled due to lack of snow.  The next Teck Coast Cup race is scheduled for Sunday, February 3rd at Whistler Olympic Park.
